He proved this again two years later with United 93, which he directed himself. When he adapted the events surrounding the Omagh bombing into the script for the eponymous TV movie, I realised he is also a brilliant screenwriter. Greengrass is one of only a gifted few directors who know how to use the hand-held camera style masterfully. When I first saw Paul Greengrass’ Bloody Sunday in 2002, I was blown away with the pic’s direction. The “Return With The Elixir” or aftermath scene offers tremendous potential for a strong, emotional farewell. Captain Phillips reminds us - as Billy Wilder did with Sunset Boulevard - that McKee can’t be further from the truth. McKee even suggests that such an ‘aftermath’ scene is not essential, and only there to allow the audience to recollect themselves before they appear presentably in broad daylight. How many movies do you know that surprise you with an amazing scene after the climax? I bet you’ll struggle to find a handful. It appeared to me as a solid film but not a must-see, until the final scene lifted it to an unexpected high. It doesn't paint anyone as the villain, even the Somali pirates are viewed fairly sympathetically and respectfully.Captain Phillips tells the true story of the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. You make it sound like he told off the union guys and then fought evil pirates with his bare hands while the National Anthem triumphantly blared in the background.Ĭaptain Phillips was a remarkably balanced movie, all things considered. If anything they made him come across as almost unlikable in the early parts, cause they never sugarcoat his joyless hardassedness. There were scenes of Phillips scolding or criticizing his crew and being a joyless hardass, but the film didn't force the idea that he was in the right and they were in the wrong. Phillips the character may have come across that way, but just because the protagonist feels a certain way doesn't mean the film is endorsing the same message. I think the actors were great, I don't agree with some of the political messages they made in the film because they are not true in anyway and quite offensive. It's really a shame that was included in the damn film because otherwise it would have been really good instead of just good. The film just seemed to pro american and anti things that help the common man. Almost makes me outright hate him.Įven the union guys in the film were painted as comically ill fitted to be working on the ship. American, ball buster who hates union guys and hates how lazy and stupid they are and they're also total cowards (how they're depicted by Phillips himself and in the film) which totally turned me off. You have this pro American, super friendly, mr. It was for the white republican pro establishment demographic. I tried really really hard to forget about that and just enjoy the cinamtic tale of a man trying to do the right thing and protect the people who work under him.īut after reading his book, reading the truth about Phillips and then seeing this movie I had a really hard time watching this movie because I felt like it wasn't for me. I think the film was good, nothing too spectacular, but I read the truth about the real captain Phillips and the real one is a total doucehbag.
